It’s definitely going to be a whole new experience: For the first time, we’ll be completely on our own in a foreign country, immersing ourselves in a different culture.
After months of weighing our options, we made the decision today: Yes, we’re taking a break and heading off to Christchurch, New Zealand—for an overseas adventure. The plan is for Thomi to begin a postgraduate MBA program, while Vroni and M&F will use the time to improve their English. We’re also hoping for lots of new experiences—new friendships, breathtaking nature, and simply a great time.
The decision was anything but easy. While M&F are excited about school uniforms, the English language, and all the new things they’ll get to experience, our four older kids aren’t quite as thrilled about the idea. They have many close friends here in Germany and would rather stay and explore Europe than venture to the other end of the world. Still, chances are they’ll come visit us for a vacation during our time abroad 😊.
Thankfully, with WhatsApp and other tools, we’ll be able to stay in close contact with family across the distance. That worked well during Thomi’s business trips to Asia and the U.S., and also during our first trip to New Zealand back in January. The only difference this time is—it won’t be just a few weeks, but two whole years.
We’re incredibly excited, because we have no idea what awaits us or what challenges we’ll face.
The decision has been made—and now we’re diving into preparations with joyful anticipation.
